What is the Fete de la Musique?

On Sunday 23rd June, Saffron Walden will come alive with the sound of music for its Fête de la Musique. Occurring every three years in Saffron Walden, the Fête is inspired by the event that originally started in Paris in which a huge variety of music was played throughout the city for everyone to enjoy. In line with this, the music is free for audiences, and will be accompanied by delicious food from local establishments and food trucks throughout the town.

Alex Wilkinson and The Timewasters

Alex Wilkinson and The Timewasters

Timewasters in name but never by Nature!  Alex Wilkinson and The Time Wasters are a 4 piece local rock group made up of Alex Wilkinson (front person/singer songwriter), Simon Thorpe (Lead Guitar), Tommy Rose (Bassist) and Paul Williams (Drummer). Their original music combines an eclectic blend of musical influence across multiple genres, with catchy hooks designed to get audiences singing along and dancing. Wilkinson’s distinctive voice and songwriting tells stories of love, loss and life, using a sound that is reminiscent of guitar rock bands of the 90’s/2000’s. Their debut EP ‘Are We There Yet?’ was released in Summer 2022 and is available to stream on all streaming services now.

Saffron Recorder Consort

Saffron Recorder Consort

The Saffron Recorder Consort is a small group of friends from Saffron Walden and the surrounding area, who enjoy getting together to play. Much of the music we play is early music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods (16th to mid-18th centuries), but there are also modern works and music of all types and dates arranged or composed for recorders. Many people are familiar with the descant (or soprano) recorder from school, however in a consort there is a range of recorders in different sizes and pitches. Alongside the descant, you will hear the treble (alto), tenor and bass recorders. Most recorder players have several instruments, and are used to swapping between different recorders according to the pieces being played.

Sawston Steel

Sawston Steel

We started life as an evening class in 2001, with a set of steel pans made for Sawston Village College. Since then, we’ve bought our own instruments from a tuner who comes over from Trinidad once a year to tune our pans. Our steel pans are made from recycled oil drums – in a past life they contained food oil. The drum surface is beaten to a concave shape before being cut to size. Notes are marked and beaten out to be individually convex. The drum is tempered and notes fine-tuned before we call it a steel pan. All by hand – it’s a skilled process. Our repertoire focuses on traditional and modern calypso, and pop songs.

The Cbreezes

The CBreezes is a wind ensemble of clarinets and saxophones run by Sara and Ian Morrison. Formed primarily as a rehearsal group for adult students it aims to provide a safe and encouraging space for learning accurate reading, style interpretation and following the conductor skills! All pieces are specially arranged so that all players “get the tune” at some point in most pieces. The Fete de la Musique provides a rare opportunity to the group outside the rehearsal room!

The Garden Youth Music Group

The Garden Youth Music Group

The Garden Youth Music Group, created and run by local singer/songwriter, Joanna Eden and Kevin Sporle, meets weekly at Fairycroft House. Our aim has always been to offer the space where young people, ages 12-18+ can hang out and make music with professional guidance in a safe, non-judgemental environment. Aside from offering this outlet for creating music, it has evolved as a serious opportunity for young people to gather with like-minded people. These extremely talented youngsters will mainly be performing their own songs, from rock to pop to indie, with outstanding musicianship and vocal harmonies. Over the years, many of them have performed at local events, culminating in a show at Saffron Hall with the Grand Union Orchestra recently.

The Vivettes

The Vivettes

The Vivettes are an original 3-piece retro garage band from London. Picture the Kinks meet the Cramps in a late night bar and you get the vibe. Founded by super-skilled drummer and vocalist Lydie, their sound is composed with a feel-good steady bass pulse from Laura and topped with Rob’s retro guitar melodies. Their unique sound fuses driving bass with raw guitar and intense drums overlaid by sweet vocals delivered in French and English. The band are currently working on their first EP and accompanying video to be released later this year.

Thursday Night Singers

We are a group of singers of all levels and genres who love to sing and be sung to. We sing as individuals rather than as a choir, and receive very positive support and feedback from our teacher and mentor, local diva Joanna Eden, who regularly attends our weekly sessions. We perform in charity music events as well as Saffron Walden’s Fete de la Musique, and at concerts at our home base, Fairycroft House Saffron Walden.

Thursday's band

Thursday’s band

Thursday s Band is a spellbinding mix of free-flowing fiddle and viola, locked down guitars, and vocal harmony. Their songs come seasoned with folk, country, cajun, classical, and a dash of flamenco. Sometimes they re personal; sometimes they tell tall tales; sometimes they break out into wistful laments and exuberant tunes. Much of the repertoire is original, with live sets broken up by sympathetic covers and exuberant tunes. The band line-up is Mark Gamon (guitar), Matt Kelly (fiddle and viola), Rhys Wilson (guitar), and David Cammish (bass). Thursday s Band has released several albums, most recently in EP format: Speed Bumps Ahead.

Umbrella BigBand

Umbrella BigBand

The Umbrella Bigband have been playing great swing music for over 50 years! Originally linked to the University of Cambridge Engineering Department, the band moved out to Stapleford in the 1980s, as part of the local “Umbrella Association”. While happy to play for any event, we have always specialised in music for dancing and play for dance schools and clubs all around the area. Recently 1940s events have become popular and we have enjoyed adapting our repertoire to the jives and lindyhops of the era, using the music of the great bandleaders such as Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller and vocalists Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. But we are very happy to play some Michael Bubl too!

Village Hall Disco Society

Village Hall Disco Society

A husband and wife DJ duo whose repertoire ranges from 80s & Yacht Rock re-edits to Nu-Disco, Soulful, Progressive and Funky House, with a smattering of bona fide classics thrown in for good measure. As our name suggests, we’ve plied our trade at parties and nights in the backwaters of Essex and Cambridgeshire. But don’t be misled with our lack of big-city credentials – we know what makes a night (or day for that matter).

Viva La Tradición

Viva La Tradición

We are a 13-piece salsa band based in Cambridge, playing mambo, merengue, cha cha cha, and a few things we turned into salsa that weren’t originally. We take our cue from the awesome salsa bands of New York, Puerto Rico, Colombia…and Essex! With three amazing vocalists, a phat horn section, and a red-hot Afro-Cuban rhythm section driving the whole show. 1970s salsa comes to Saffron Walden. There’s even a quick lesson in the basic salsa steps at the start, so nobody has any excuses…. que sabor!!!
